Is voting third party, throwing away my vote?

July 29, 2016 by eident Leave a Comment

635941177673232556610802541_why-we-need-a-third-party

For the last couple weeks I have posted Facebook articles in support of Gov. Gary Johnson, a Libertarian candidate for President of the United States.  I have since received messages from both friends and family, either Trump or Clinton supporters, telling me that voting for Gary Johnson would be “throwing away my vote”.  They infer that I am not using my brain by voting third party. These people then try to convince me to vote for their preferred candidate.  I’m not going to take the bait and argue with each person. Therefore, I’m posting this article explaining my rational for considering voting for a third party. You are welcome to disagree with me, but please don’t try to convince me to vote for your candidate.

  1. I like Gary Johnson more than the other candidates.  He aligns most closely to my philosophy for our country. Voting for who I believe is the best option is not “throwing away my vote”, not voting at all would.
  2. I refuse to vote for an undesirable candidate to prevent another undesirable candidate from winning, when there is a desirable candidate on the ballot.  Voting against candidates are not how elections are supposed to work.  I hope that if all the voters who prefer a third party candidate actually vote for the third party candidate, that the third party candidate may have a chance to win.  Maybe there are enough people who think like me that Gary Johnson could win.  But if I don’t live this ideal, then I’m part of the problem.
  3. Both major party candidates, and their parties, are equally undesirable for similar and different reasons.  I can’t bring myself to support either major party candidate, so I won’t.

Ask my wife, I’m not a person who quickly makes decisions.  I like to do a lot of research from many different perspectives before I make almost any decision. Also, I want to feel good about the candidate that I support.  Until I learn of some reason why Gov. Gary Johnson is a bad option for my vote, I feel good that my vote is not wasted.

Groomer ride at SkiBrule

We had a cool opportunity to ride the new groomer at SkiBrule.  It was neat to see another side of the slopes and learn about how the slopes are maintained each night.

Got rear ended. Now the insurance company saga.

November 20, 2012 by eident Leave a Comment

I was stopped in traffic on I-55 minding my own business when BAM!  A young lady ran into the back of my car with her car.  After shaking off the shock, I got out of the car to assess the damage.  The bumper is bashed in and a large dent in the trunk.

The young lady says to me, “Is it bad?”.

I said, “We’ll there is damage.” as I reached for my phone.

She says, “Please don’t call the police.  I don’t have a driver’s license. I’ll give you my insurance information.”

Hmmm. No. “I’m sorry you hit me and that you don’t have a driver’s license.  However, I don’t know you nor do I know your insurance company.  There was an accident that caused damage on a public highway.  We need to call the police.”

I called the police and they arrived 30 minutes later.  The trooper took the report and sent me on my way.

The next day, I look at the information exchange form that the trooper gave me.  The young lady doesn’t own the vehicle.  However, the vehicle is insured by the “Unique Insurance Company” here is Illinois outside of Chicago.  After a quick search on Google I find that they have many many complaints and an “F” rating with the Better Business Bureau.  On the web, I find horror story after horror story about this company.  I contact my Allstate insurance agent who suggests I file the claim through Allstate.  Within a couple of days, I saw a claims adjuster who estimated the damage and wrote my a check, minus the $600 collision deductible.  However, they will try to recover the loss from Unique Insurance Company and send me a check from my deductible.  Way to go Allstate.

Now, I’m waiting for Unique Insurance Company to pay Allstate so I can recover the deductible.  The Allstate claim agent called me today to that Unique Insurance Company made an offer to settle, but it was way too low of an amount.

So far, I’m very happy with Allstate.  I switched to them a little over a year ago and have had a really good experience.  My agent, Nathan Dean in Northlake IL, has been great.  If you need insurance, please give him a call.
